Associate Cloud Engineer exam: format, sections, study plan

Who the Associate Cloud Engineer exam is for

The Google Cloud exam page describes an Associate Cloud Engineer as someone who "deploys and secures applications, services, and infrastructure", monitors the operations of multiple projects, and maintains enterprise solutions to meet target performance metrics. This person has experience with public clouds or on-premises solutions and performs common platform-based tasks, supported by AI tooling, on Google-managed or self-managed services.

There is no prerequisite. The page recommends more than six months of hands-on experience with Google Cloud. In practice, prepare for hands-on questions: which command, which setting or which service fits a given situation.

Sections and weights

The exam guide defines four sections with an approximate weight each, split into numbered objectives. It gives no weight per objective.

SectionWeightWhat it covers
Setting up a cloud solution environment~20 %Resource hierarchy and organization policies; IAM roles in a project; users and groups in Cloud Identity; APIs, quotas, Cloud Asset Inventory; billing accounts, budgets, alerts and exports
Planning and implementing a cloud solution~30 %Choosing compute (Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud Run functions); storage and data products and Cloud Storage classes; VPCs, firewall rules, VPN and load balancers; infrastructure as code tooling
Ensuring the successful operation of a cloud solution~30 %Managing instances, snapshots and images; GKE node pools and Kubernetes objects; new Cloud Run versions and traffic splitting; storage lifecycle, backups and queries; subnets, static IPs, routes, Cloud DNS and Cloud NAT; monitoring and logging
Configuring access and security~20 %IAM policies, role types and custom roles; service accounts, impersonation, short-lived credentials and Workload Identity Federation

Points the guide spells out

  • Cloud Storage options: Standard, Nearline, Coldline and Archive are named in the storage objective.
  • Networking operations: resizing a subnet's IPv4 address range, reserving static external or internal IP addresses, adding custom static routes in a VPC.
  • Service accounts: creating them, using them in IAM policies with minimum permissions, assigning them to resources, managing impersonation and short-lived credentials, using one with a GKE application.
  • Observability: Ops Agent, Google Cloud Managed Service for Prometheus, Active Assist and Cloud Hub appear in the monitoring and logging objective.
  • AI tooling: Gemini Cloud Assist is named several times, for example to analyze resources and for Cloud Monitoring.
  • Renamed products: the guide writes, for instance, "Agent Runtime on Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform" with the former name Vertex AI Agent Engine in brackets.

How to prepare

  1. Read the Associate Cloud Engineer exam page on Google Cloud for registration, languages and current conditions.
  2. Read the exam guide (PDF) and copy each numbered objective and its considerations into a checklist.
  3. Follow the Cloud Engineer Learning Path that the exam page points to.
  4. Work in a test project rather than only reading: create a project, link it to a billing account with a budget alert, create a VM and a managed instance group, deploy a container on Cloud Run, then delete everything.
  5. Give the two ~30 % sections (planning and implementing, and operations) the most time, and practise the gcloud and kubectl commands they imply.
  6. Spend a dedicated session on IAM and service accounts: role types, inheritance through the hierarchy, impersonation. The whole fourth section depends on it.
  7. Take our Associate Cloud Engineer practice exam under timed conditions, then review each missed question in the free study mode.
  8. Shortly before the exam, re-read the exam page and the guide in case product names or conditions have changed.
