Exam comparison
SAA-C03 vs SOA-C03: Design or operations?
Both SAA-C03 (Solutions Architect – Associate) and SOA-C03 (CloudOps Engineer – Associate) are AWS certifications at the same level (Associate) and with identical exam structure: 130 minutes, 65 questions, score 720. The difference is in role focus: SAA-C03 prepares you to design cloud solutions; SOA-C03 prepares you to operate and maintain them.
In short: Choose SAA-C03 if you design cloud systems; choose SOA-C03 if you manage and troubleshoot them in production.
| SAA-C03 | SOA-C03 | |

| Exam Code | SAA-C03 | SOA-C03 |
| Role / Level | Solutions Architect – Associate (design) | CloudOps Engineer – Associate (operations) |
| Duration | 130 minutes | 130 minutes |

Core Competencies
SAA-C03 (Design)
- Design Secure Architectures 30%
- Design Resilient Architectures 26%
- Design High-Performing Architectures 24%
- Design Cost-Optimized Architectures 20%
SOA-C03 (Operations)
- Monitoring, Logging, Analysis, Remediation, and Performance Optimization 22%
- Reliability and Business Continuity 22%
- Deployment, Provisioning, and Automation 22%
- Security and Compliance 16%
- Networking and Content Delivery 18%
Key Differences in Scope
SAA-C03 asks: "What architecture will solve this business problem?" Focus: choosing the right services, integrating them securely, ensuring availability and performance, and optimizing cost. Example: you design a multi-tier e-commerce platform.
SOA-C03 asks: "How do I keep this system running?" Focus: monitoring metrics, responding to alerts, automating deployment, managing updates, troubleshooting failures, and maintaining compliance. Example: you monitor that e-commerce platform, detect a spike in error rates, and trigger auto-remediation.
In a real organization, Solutions Architects design systems; SysOps Engineers (and CloudOps Engineers) operate them. Both certifications are valuable and often taken together over a career.
Question Types and Scenarios
Both exams use multiple-choice and multiple-response questions. SAA-C03 scenario: "A customer wants to migrate on-premises SQL Server to AWS. Which architecture satisfies the requirements?" SOA-C03 scenario: "CloudWatch shows error rates rising in production. Which automated action resolves the issue?"
Which Should You Choose?
Choose SAA-C03 if…
- Your role involves designing cloud systems, proposing architectures, or advising on best practices.
- You work as a solutions consultant, architect, or technical lead.
- You want to advance toward AWS Professional Architect later.
- You prefer strategic thinking over hands-on operations.
Choose SOA-C03 if…
- Your day-to-day work is managing, monitoring, and troubleshooting cloud systems.
- You hold a systems administrator, DevOps, or operations engineer title.
- You work with configuration management, deployment automation, and incident response.
- You want to demonstrate production readiness and operational expertise.
How to Prepare
- Read the official guide: SAA-C03 or SOA-C03.
- SAA-C03: practice designing architectures on paper before using AWS. SOA-C03: hands-on experience with CloudWatch, Systems Manager, Auto Scaling is essential.
- Practice with our SAA-C03 exam and SOA-C03 exam. Use the study mode to focus on weak areas.
