Claude Architect or Associate: Which certification?
Claude Architect or Associate Foundations?
Anthropic offers two « Foundations » certifications: Claude Certified Architect – Foundations (CCAR-F) and Claude Certified Associate – Foundations (CCAO-F). Architect is aimed at solution architects who design and implement production applications with Claude. Associate is aimed at professionals who use Claude as a productivity tool in roles such as operations, marketing, project management, education, and communications; its guide states that it is not intended for software developers who build against APIs or design agentic systems.
In short: Choose Architect if you build production applications with the Claude APIs, Agent SDK, Claude Code, and MCP. Choose Associate if you use Claude in your daily work (Projects, artifacts, connectors) without writing code against the API.

Key differences in scope
Architect Foundations is a builder's exam. Its five domains cover agentic architecture and orchestration, tool design and MCP integration, Claude Code configuration and workflows, prompt engineering with structured output, and context management and reliability.
Associate Foundations is a user's exam. Its domains cover Claude Projects (instructions and knowledge sources), artifacts, connectors such as Google Drive or Gmail, the choice between Claude models (Haiku, Sonnet, Opus) and product features, output evaluation, and governance (data sensitivity, privacy, organizational AI policies). It contains no API content.
Overlap: Both test prompting. Architect does it through prompt engineering and structured output for applications; Associate through prompting and task execution in everyday work.
